Building Wudget since 2024 has been my first deep dive into creating my own product from scratch.
I guided the whole vision to the App Store launch, wearing every hat from product strategist to lead UX designer.
Most finance apps are basically stress generators by forcing you to constantly crunch numbers, juggle expenses and feel guilty about treating yourself.
With Wudget, we wanted to flip the script.
The goal was to build a system that handles the heavy lifting of financial structure in the background, letting the user simply live their life.
The 50/30/20 Engine
We baked the classic 50/30/20 rule into the app’s core.
Every time you get paid, Wudget automatically splits your income into must-haves, fun stuff and savings.
It completely removes the headache of manual math, though users can easily tweak these ratios to fit their unique lifestyle.
Radical Simplicity
From day one, our north star was radical simplicity.
We actively fought against the usual tab bars and nested menus, challenging ourselves to build the entire experience around a single, powerful dashboard.
Honestly, sticking to this was tough.

The product naturally wanted to grow into a complex, multi-screen maze, and we almost caved a few times.
But holding the line on that single-screen vision was worth it.
Everything you need is right there at a glance.
Frictionless Everyday Use
Recording an expense shouldn't feel like filling out a tax return.
We stripped the transaction flow down to its absolute bare bones: tap, pick a category, punch in the amount.
Done.

We then took that same frictionless logic and applied it across the board, from setting up accounts to adding new categories.

Smart Distribution & Flexibility
The real magic happens when you get paid.
By default, Wudget automatically routes your income into your chosen buckets, completely removing the headache of manual math.

And while 50/30/20 is a great starting point, we know real life doesn't always fit neatly into those boxes.
Users can easily tweak these ratios or spin up custom accounts to build a financial setup that actually works for their unique lifestyle.

The Big Picture
We wanted to give users a clear view of their long-term habits, so we built a clean analytics section to track the bigger picture.

And true to its name. Wudget is a mashup of 'Budget' and 'Widget'.
Home Screen widgets were never an afterthought.

A Fair Business Model
Figuring out how to make money without being evil was a whole other challenge.
Hiding the most useful tools behind a hard paywall just felt wrong, especially for people trying to get their finances in order.
So, we gave away the core engine for free.

The free version gives you the complete 50/30/20 setup with no artificial roadblocks.
The paid model only steps in when users want to dig deeper with unlimited custom accounts and complex categories.

Takeaways & What's Next
Building Wudget was my first deep dive into creating my own product from the ground up.
I was juggling UX, art direction, business strategy, and even the legalities of launching. It fundamentally shifted how I see design.
Our biggest hurdle turned out to be growth. We had the vision and the code, but lacked the marketing chops to get real traction.
While the project is currently on hold, stepping out of the traditional designer role to build something entirely my own was a massive milestone that still shapes how I tackle product problems today.
